Birth to One Year
Within the first six months a child is just beginning to absorb the world around him. Each of the senses is being explored and responded to – sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. And he begins to gain fundamental control over his motor skills. By six months he will often “grasp” objects and pull them close for thorough inspection. Babies at this age delight in looking at bright objects and will listen intently to lively sounds.
Based on these developmental needs consider the following toys:
Rattles
Teethers
Soft Toys
Soft dolls such as towel dolls and other “clutchable” playthings
Bath toys
In the second half of the first year a child is mastering even more control over her body. Watch as she sits, crawls and stands, and actually discovers how to use her thumb separately to grip toys and other objects of interest. She is motivated to explore by her innate curiosity and examines objects thoroughly, often with her mouth. Her concentration improves.
Based on these developmental needs consider the following toys:
Blocks
Stuffed toys
Nesting toys
Soft rolling toys
